Beach Trash Awareness Event

STUART—Join the River Kidz Saturday, April 7 from 10am-1pm at Sewall’s Point Park to celebrate the launch of its third edition workbook and to learn more about how we can help our waterways by understanding the adverse repercussions of beach trash. Money raised from TCPalm’s 12 Days of Christmas Drive financed the event.

Local artists and workbook illustrator Julia Kelly will be on hand at the event to demonstrate how to convert beach trash into an art and awareness program about the growing problem littering our shores. The Knopf Family Foundation contributed the necessary funds to print its third edition work book designed to educate all Martin County second graders about regional waterways through the perspective of Marty the Manatee.

“Our waterways impact the entire health of our community both above and below the surface of our lagoon,” said TC Trash Artist Cristina Maldonado. “Educating children in a fun, collaborative and interactive way can shape how future generations think about our fragile ecosystem.”

How can you participate?

  • Start combing the beaches now for plastic, rope and other debris
  • Bring your collected items to the April 7th event and join others in creating art projects that will be photographed and used to inform our community and elected officials
  • Participate in our collaborative “Marty the Manatee” art project using recycled and beach trash materials

Kids eight and under, nine to fourteen and 15 and up can enter three contests that include most beach trash collected, most unusual beach trash item found, and most creative art project made on site.
